Stay at Home: Fun DIY Activities for Moms and Daughters

Are you searching for fun DIY activities to spice up the day?

There is nothing more special than the bond between a mother and her daughter. Unfortunately, time can move so quickly that in a blink of an eye our precious little girls develop into mature women. I suppose that’s just how life goes.

With that said, many of us now are being given the gift of time. This is an incredible chance to spend quality time with your daughter, a time that you may never forget.

So let’s dig in!

I will be sharing some DIY activities that will not only strengthen your mother-daughter relationship, but they will also transform long, uneventful days into ones of fun and excitement!

DIY Lotion

If you’re like me and my daughter, each night we look forward to lathering up with our lush lotions and perfumes.

It took a few years but I finally perfected a no-fail recipe for a DIY lotion. Not only does it smell as sweet as a baby but the color is a beautiful, feminine shade of pale pink. Even better, the lotion will lock in moisture and your entire body (especially legs) will feel and look as smooth as silk.

(All ingredients can be purchased at the Dollar General)

RECIPE:

1/2 Jar (or more) of Vaseline

1 Jar of Vitamin E Cream

1 Jar of Cocoa butter

1 Bottle of Baby Lotion (name brand or generic, I prefer to mix a little of each.)

1 large splash of Vitamin E oil

  • Pour all ingredients into a large mixing bowl
  • Beat ingredients with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until creamy. (A hand mixer can be used in place of an electric mixer.)
  • Turn off the mixer and check your lotion. You want the consistency to be almost buttery. It should look somewhat thick but not too clumpy.
  • Lastly, decrease the mixer to a low speed for another 30 seconds and finish blending.

A little tip: Reuse empty containers of the vitamin E and cocoa butter cream to store your finished lotion. (I have also been saving our empty jars of curly hair products.) Another idea is to use small Tupperware containers.

Or better yet, have your daughter search around the house for creative containers (No telling what she may find!)

Spa Day

DIY fun

This is the perfect time to plan a fun DIY spa day. Grab a couple of those facial masks you’ve been too busy to try and get ready to relax.

Set the mood– Head to the Pandora app and select: “Spa Music Stations” (This will make the moment much more fun and memorable.)

Light a few of your favorite candles to keep the spa vibe going!

Unwind and enjoy the sweet scent of candles burning and soft music playing as your facial mask works its magic!

DIY Lip Gloss

What’s more fun than making your very own DIY lip gloss? Go to Buzzfeed’s website and check out their clever Lip Gloss Recipe. Within no time you will have a lip gloss in every color of the rainbow.

Thankfully, it only requires a few ingredients!

  • Non-toxic Crayons
  • Coconut Oil
  • Small Containers

* Vaseline may be substituted for Coconut oil.

Before making your DIY gloss, of course, you will need a few small containers to safely store your product. If you do not have anything available to use at home, you may need to get extra crafty!

Hair Masks

No matter if you’re a natural curly girl or straight-haired gal, hair masks can be incredibly beneficial for the overall health of your lovely locks.

Overuse of hairdryers, straighteners, curling wands, bleach, etc.. may damage even the most beautiful heads of hair.

One life-changing hair treatment that I have fallen in love with is called a Rice-Water-Treatment.

So, if you have a bag of white rice laying in the pantry, you girls may want to head to the kitchen and give this method a try! The good thing is-rice water is thought to contain many minerals and vitamins according to medicalnewstoday.com. Antioxidants, B vitamins, and vitamin E are a few mentioned.

Recipe:

  • 1 cup of rice
  • 5-6 cups of water
  • Large pot for boiling
  • Strainer

First– Boil rice until cooked

Second- Set a “Catch Bowl” into the sink and drain rice.

Then- Cool rice water for around 10 minutes

After washing your hair (not conditioning)-bend your head over the sink or bathtub. Use a cup and gently pour the rice water over your freshly washed hair. (Keep the catch bowl in your sink to prevent any waste of rice water)

Continue to pour the rice water over your head and lightly massage your scalp. Do this until your hair is completely saturated with the rice water.

Next, wrap your hair into a towel or shower cap and wait for approximately 15 minutes.

Finally, use warm water and rinse the rice water from your hair. After completely rinsed, apply your favorite conditioner.

You will notice many amazing benefits including:

Increased shine

Stronger hair

Potential hair growth

Less hair breakage

Play Dress Up!

Fun DIY

When I was a kid, playing dress-up was one of my favorite things to do. I remember rummaging through my grandmother’s closet and trying on all of her multi-colored belts, faux fur jackets and of course, her fancy high heel shoes. (She had a small foot, so I got lucky)

What can make dress ups even more fun?

Blare some of your favorite tunes and start a mini dance party while trying on clothes.

Grab the camera and take some selfies to savor the moment. Now you have forever memories and a few pictures to laugh at later.

Dress up Options:

Jewelry

Purses

Belts

Scarves

Hats

Skirts

Mani’s and Pedis

Fun DIY

When all else fails, do your nails!

Before you get started, try doing a quick foot or hand soak in a tub full of warm water. Add fresh scented soaps to enhance the mood. This will soften your skin and feel extremely relaxing.

Next, lay a few towels or sheets on your floor or table. Now you can gather your nail supplies and neatly place them down.

It’s time to use your imagination. Pretend you’re at the nail shop and take turns giving each other manicures and pedicures. This is a prime time to experiment with the polishes you have been neglecting to use. (We tend to hoard nail polish around my house.)

Make the best out of your time together. Get creative and try bold colors and designs you typically would never experiment with… In the end, you will have pretty nails and one more happy memory made.

My Final Thoughts:

Whether it’s a DIY craft or a spontaneous dance party, just have fun being together. Some of my favorite moments with my daughter have happened during the most unexpected times. I still have a few more years before my sweet girl heads to college. Until then, I will cherish every moment and hopefully make many more memories she will never forget.
